Punjab 21 Dead, 10 Hospitalized After Consuming Methanol-Laced Alcohol

At least 21 people have died and 10 others are receiving treatment in hospital after consuming methanol-laced illicit alcohol in India’s northern Punjab state, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The victims, all residents of villages in Amritsar district, reportedly drank the toxic liquor late Monday night, according to AFP.
Methanol, a dangerous chemical sometimes added to illegal alcohol to increase its potency, can cause severe health issues such as blindness, organ failure, and even death.
“Now death toll is 21. And 10 admitted in hospitals,” said a statement from the public relations officer of Amritsar district.
Punjab police announced that nine individuals, including the alleged mastermind and several local distributors, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to police, methanol used in the spurious liquor was sourced online.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the police stated: “In an unfortunate incident in Majitha, Amritsar: Punjab Police takes swift action after a tragic loss of lives due to spurious liquor. FIRs have been filed under relevant provisions of the BNS and Excise Act. The DSP and SHO of Majitha subdivision have been suspended for gross negligence, and departmental inquiries have been launched.”
The police emphasized their commitment to dismantling illicit liquor networks and holding negligent officials accountable. “We stand united in grief—and in our resolve to deliver justice and prevent such tragedies in the future,” the statement added.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also vowed that those responsible would face strict consequences.
