Abia Monarch, Two Others Remanded Over Alleged Murder of 20-Year-Old Man

Court Orders Case File Transfer to DPP as Grieving Father Seeks Justice

A Magistrate Court in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State has ordered the remand of His Royal Highness, Eze James Ogbonna, the traditional ruler of Okai Item, along with two others, in the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Umuahia over an alleged murder case.

The monarch, alongside Igwe Anyim and Ndukwe Sunday Igara, is accused of involvement in the brutal killing of 20-year-old Ndukwe Isaac, reportedly lynched by angry youths in the community on January 28.

The victim’s father, Isaac Maduka, a native of Umuikpa Akanu, has called for justice, pleading with authorities to ensure those responsible for his son’s death face the full weight of the law.

At the hearing, the presiding magistrate, Her Worship Elizabeth, directed the prosecuting attorney to transfer the case file to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP). This decision came despite the prosecutor, U. Ekpo, arguing that he had already filed the necessary information before the court and should not have to remit the case file again. However, he complied in the interest of public peace.

Ekpo emphasized the prosecution’s commitment to the case, noting that filing information before a high court would allow the defendants to be properly arraigned and enter a plea.

However, defense counsel J. Osisiogu countered, stating that as of the hearing date, the prosecution had yet to serve any information to the defendants.

The court adjourned the case to March 27 for further proceedings.
