Over 16,000 Adolescent Girls Return to School in Nasarawa State

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has successfully facilitated the return of more than 16,000 adolescent girls to school through his enhanced education initiatives.
This announcement was made by Mr. Peter Ahemba, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Affairs, during a bimonthly press briefing held in Lafia on Sunday.
Ahemba highlighted that, in partnership with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, Governor Sule has finalized plans to establish 30 new schools for both junior and senior secondary levels across all 13 local government areas in the state, with a focus on gender-sensitive facilities.
He emphasized the importance of support and advocacy from the state’s first-class traditional rulers, who have pledged to promote girls’ education and increase enrollment rates.
To date, the AGILE project has successfully reintegrated over 16,000 adolescent girls into the educational system, with arrangements underway to hire more than 1,000 teachers.
This initiative is part of a World Bank-assisted program aimed at enhancing secondary education opportunities for girls in targeted states across Nigeria.
Ahemba also reported that the state government funded the registration fees for over 24,000 candidates who participated in the National Examination Council (NECO) exams last year at all public schools.
Furthermore, he confirmed that Governor Sule has committed to covering the NECO fees for all senior secondary school candidates taking exams in 2025, regardless of their residency status, as long as they are enrolled in public schools within the state.
