Transparency Concerns Rise as TCN Blocks Public Access to DisCos’ Load Data

Stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) have raised concerns over the Independent System Operator (ISO) of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) restricting access to the daily load profile of Distribution Companies (DisCos) on its website.

The section of the website, which previously allowed public monitoring of DisCos’ electricity distribution performance, has been inaccessible for over a month without any official explanation.

Efforts to reach TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, for clarification were unsuccessful as she neither answered phone calls nor responded to WhatsApp inquiries.

Reacting to the situation, Sage Consulting’s Lead Power Sector Analyst, Mr. Bode Fadipe, expressed concerns that TCN’s decision to block access to the data raises suspicions about potential concealment.

“If other information is accessible on that platform and it is not a technical issue, what could be responsible for that? Do they have anything to hide?

If they have resorted to that, we call for greater transparency so that it can help us to see performance. I think it is not a very good sign because the power sector is supposed to be a transparent industry where people can pick up information and the public can monitor all the time and be able to hold DisCos responsible,” he said.

Fadipe emphasized that the daily load profile serves as a critical tool for evaluating DisCos’ efficiency, adding that restricting access to the data could enable them to reject electricity loads without accountability.

Stakeholders have called on TCN to restore access to the platform, urging greater transparency in Nigeria’s power sector.
