15 Injured in Lagos Gas Explosion Triggered by Cylinder Leak
At least 15 people, including children, sustained injuries on Sunday following a gas explosion at Ijora-Badia in Lagos State.
The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. at 12, Amosu Street in Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area. Reports indicate that a leaking 25kg gas cylinder in a mini-shop located in front of a 15-room residential building and seven adjoining shops ignited after coming in contact with an open flame.
The resulting explosion spread rapidly, affecting five other 25kg cylinders and engulfing parts of the building before emergency responders arrived at the scene.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, no fatalities were recorded.
“Fifteen persons both adults and children sustained varying degrees of injuries. A number of the victims have been administered first aids and others have been taken to the hospital. It is however pertinent to state that none of the cases are life threatening,” said the agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye.
The fire was successfully extinguished, and all gas cylinders were safely evacuated from the scene to prevent further risk.

In her statement, Adeseye explained that the explosion was caused by product mishandling, confirming that the leaking cylinder attracted nearby flames which triggered the blast.
“The gas leakage was caused by mishandling of products,” she said, reiterating the importance of proper safety practices when handling gas cylinders.
Authorities continue to assess the damage while reminding residents to follow safety protocols to avoid similar incidents.
