17 Benue LGAs Under Siege, Thousands Displaced — BSEMA

The Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Dr. James Iorpuu, has revealed that 17 out of the 23 local government areas in Benue State are currently facing various forms of attacks, displacing thousands of residents from their homes.

Speaking with journalists in Makurdi, Dr. Iorpuu identified Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Konshisha, Gboko, Ushongo, and one other local council as the only areas yet to experience the violence.

He described the situation as a deepening humanitarian crisis that has left hundreds of thousands homeless and financially distressed, calling for urgent intervention from both the federal and state governments to halt the spread of displacement.

Dr. Iorpuu, who also serves as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, further warned that without the dredging of Rivers Benue and Niger, Nigeria would continue to suffer from recurring and destructive annual floods.

He noted that the recent Conference of State Emergency Management Agencies held in Lagos had boosted the operational capacity of emergency responders in the state.

Commending Governor Hyacinth Alia for his leadership, the BSEMA boss hailed the governor’s performance as “exceptional,” particularly praising his fiscal discipline and decision not to borrow from financial institutions.

Responding to an independent report that rated the Alia administration as “average,” Dr. Iorpuu disagreed, asserting that the governor’s record of achievements speaks for itself.

He also disclosed that the Divine Mandate Group — which spearheaded Governor Alia’s 2023 election campaign — remains proud of his achievements and is preparing to launch a second-phase campaign to highlight his administration’s successes ahead of the 2027 elections.
