19 Dead, Including 5 Children, in Road Crash on Lokoja -Obajana Highway

A devastating road accident on Sunday evening along the Lokoja–Obajana highway in Kogi State has claimed the lives of 19 people, including five children, and left eight others injured.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi State, Mr. Kumar Tsukwam, confirmed the tragic incident during a press briefing on Monday in Lokoja. He described the crash as both tragic and avoidable.

The fatal collision occurred near the Gadabiu community in Lokoja Local Government Area. It involved a Toyota bus traveling to Abuja from the southern region and an oncoming articulated truck. According to Tsukwam, the bus driver, allegedly speeding, attempted to overtake another vehicle and crashed head-on into the truck.

“A total of 27 individuals were involved in the crash. Nineteen died instantly, including five children who were burnt beyond recognition, while eight others sustained various injuries—ranging from fractures and dislocations to severe burns,” Tsukwam said.

Emergency services, including FRSC and police teams, responded swiftly, evacuating the injured to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for urgent treatment.

Tsukwam emphasized the need for safer driving habits: “Speeding and reckless overtaking remain deadly. The roads are not race tracks. Every driver must realize that one careless move can cost many lives.”

The FRSC has launched a full investigation into the crash and is working to identify the victims and notify their families.
