Residents of Tungamaje, a quiet settlement on the outskirts of Zuba, were left in shock and devastation following a sudden nighttime raid on Sunday, during which military personnel demolished several homes and a long-standing community centre. The incident, which occurred under the cover of darkness, has sparked public outrage and raised serious concerns about the use of force and lack of communication from authorities.

According to eyewitness accounts, heavily armed soldiers arrived in the area shortly after midnight and began tearing down structures without prior notice or explanation. The targeted buildings included residential homes and the local community hub that had served as a meeting space and resource centre for youth, women, and the elderly.

“We were sleeping when we heard loud bangs and shouting. By the time we stepped outside, the army was already pulling down our homes,” said Sarah Usman, a mother of three whose house was reduced to rubble. “They didn’t say anything, just told us to move away or face the consequences.”

Several families have been left homeless, with many now seeking shelter under makeshift tents and in nearby churches. The demolished community hub was a critical part of daily life for the residents, offering vocational training, literacy programs, and a safe space for community dialogue.

Local leaders have condemned the raid, calling it a blatant act of intimidation and a violation of human rights. “There was no official communication, no court order, and no consultation with the community. This action is not only unlawful but inhumane,” said Musa Yahaya, a local council chairperson.

Military officials have yet to issue a formal statement explaining the operation. Speculation is rife that the raid may be linked to ongoing land disputes in the area, though this remains unconfirmed.

Human rights organizations have called for an immediate investigation into the incident and demanded that the affected families be compensated and resettled. “What happened in Tungamaje is a gross abuse of power. We urge the government to hold those responsible accountable and ensure this never happens again,” said Sheila Kasaija, a legal advocate with the Human Rights Foundation Uganda.

As the sun rises on a broken community, the residents of Tungamaje are left picking up the pieces of their lives — confused, grieving, and still searching for answers.
