2027: I’ll Step Down in 2031 If One-Term Deal Is Reached — Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed readiness to serve only one term in office if a proposed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections adopts that condition.

Obi made the declaration during a live conversation on X Spaces (formerly Twitter), titled #PeterObiOnParallelFacts, which drew over 10,000 listeners and thousands of interactions.

Responding to a question from a participant named Balactic, the former Anambra State governor stated clearly that he would willingly exit office on May 28, 2031, if a one-term presidency and subsequent power rotation to Northern Nigeria were part of the coalition agreement.

“If the agreement is one term, I will leave on May 28, 2031 — not even May 29,” he said emphatically.

Obi emphasized that his political ambition is driven by a passion for national development rather than personal gain.

“I’m not desperate to be president. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work,” he affirmed.

He also underscored the significance of zoning arrangements and coalition partnerships, describing them as vital to ensuring political stability and unity in Nigeria’s diverse landscape.

His remarks come amid growing consultations among opposition figures seeking to form a united front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
