FG Disappoints Corp Members Over Allowance Increment

The much-anticipated increment in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) allowance has yet to take effect, as corps members continue to receive the old ₦33,000 stipend—contrary to the ₦77,000 promised by the Federal Government.
Multiple corps members confirmed that their February allowance, paid on Friday night, remained unchanged at ₦33,000, despite assurances from NYSC leadership that the new amount would take effect from February 2025.
In January, NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, had assured corps members that the allowance increase was approved and only awaited the passage of the 2025 budget. However, with February now gone, no official statement has been issued explaining the delay.
The situation has left many corps members frustrated, especially amid rising inflation and economic hardship. Many struggle to afford basic necessities such as food, transportation, and housing, as the cost of living continues to soar under the Tinubu administration.
A corps member serving in Oyo State expressed his frustration, saying, “They told us we would get ₦77,000 this month, but nothing has changed. How do they expect us to survive on ₦33,000 in this economy?”

Another corps member in Kano described the situation as proof of the government’s disregard for young Nigerians. “We are serving the country, yet we cannot even afford decent meals. The government knows ₦33,000 is not enough, but they don’t care,” she lamented.
The failure to implement the promised increase has further strained public trust in the Tinubu administration, which has already faced criticism over economic policies that have worsened inflation, unemployment, and poverty.
