8 Killed as Gunmen Attack Plateau Community, 96 Homes Razed

Eight people have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack by gunmen on Chicim community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

According to local sources, the attack occurred around 10 p.m. on Tuesday when the gunmen invaded the community, located just a kilometer from Mangu town and opened fire indiscriminately while residents were asleep.

Kespan Iliya, a resident of the area, described the terrifying moment:

“The members of the community were asleep when the gunmen arrived in a commando style and started shooting anything at sight.”

Three persons who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment, according to eyewitness accounts.

In a related incident on the same day, over 96 houses were razed in Gyenbwas, a nearby community in Langai District, also within Mangu LGA. The scale of destruction has further heightened tensions in the area.

The Plateau State Police Command spokesman, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the attacks in a statement, assuring residents of a swift security response.

“CP Emmanuel Adesina has deployed additional manpower to Mangu LGA where he visited the scenes of the incident and commiserated with the bereaved families,” the statement read.

The recent violence is part of a worrying trend of escalating insecurity in Plateau State, with residents calling for urgent and sustained government intervention to restore peace and protect lives.
