Aba Power Implements Over 50% Electricity Tariff Hike Amid Rising Costs

Aba Power Limited Electric (APLE) has announced a significant electricity tariff increase exceeding 50%, following approval by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Operating within its exclusive coverage area in Aba, Abia State, the electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) disclosed the tariff hike in a notice shared on its official X handle.

The new tariff structure, which took effect on January 1, 2025, will see customers in Band B paying between N180.77 and N203/kWh, while those in Band C feeders will pay between N145 and N205/kWh.

“We also wish to inform you that we have recently received an approval order from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for an adjustment of electricity tariffs, effective January 1, 2025.

“This adjustment will enable us to cushion the effects of recent macroeconomic developments in Nigeria on our ability to continue to deliver a high quality of service to our customers in compliance with regulatory standards,” the company stated.

The tariff hike is attributed to inflation, rising exchange rates, and soaring operational costs. APLE had initially applied to NERC in December 2024 for an extraordinary tariff review, proposing an increase of 123.33%.

During a public hearing organized by NERC in Abuja, APLE justified its request by citing mounting macroeconomic pressures impacting its operations. The adjustment aims to ensure the company can maintain service quality while adhering to regulatory standards.
