Abia Government, Traders Back NAFDAC’s Crackdown on Fake Products in Aba

The Abia State government has pledged to support the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in its efforts to eliminate fake and expired products from Eziukwu Road Market in Aba, commonly known as Cemetery Market.

Speaking at the market, the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Kingsley Nwokocha, warned traders about the dangers of selling counterfeit and re-dated expired products. He described fake goods as a serious threat to public health and safety.

The Mayor of Aba South LGA, Obialor Anyanwu, represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Gideon Aduka, also condemned the illegal activities of some traders. “We are worried about the activities of some traders who produce fake products or re-write the dates of already expired products in Eziukwu Market,” he said. He also commended NAFDAC for its crackdown on harmful products.

In response to the growing concerns, the interim chairman of Eziukwu Market, Alphonsus Udeigbo, revealed that a five-man committee had been established to combat fake and expired products in the market. He expressed appreciation to both NAFDAC and the Abia State government for their interventions.

Leading the enforcement operation, the South East Zonal Director of NAFDAC, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, highlighted the health risks posed by counterfeit products, noting that many Nigerians travel abroad for treatment of terminal diseases linked to unsafe consumption.

During the raid, several shops were sealed, while fake and expired products were confiscated and destroyed. The operation marks a significant step in the fight against counterfeit goods in Aba, with authorities vowing to sustain the pressure on violators.
