Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Chaka Chukwumerije, Escapes Assassination Attempt.

The Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday night, June 7, 2025.

The attack occurred near Ezinnachi, along the Enugu-Umuahia Expressway, shortly after he departed Umunneochi, his hometown, en route to Umuahia, the state capital.

According to Mr. Chukwumerije, unidentified gunmen intercepted his convoy and opened fire on his vehicle. He recounted that the assailants fired multiple shots, with several bullets striking the car in close proximity to where he was seated.

In a video statement released after the incident, Mr. Chukwumerije—son of the late Senator Uche Chukwumerije—expressed gratitude for surviving the attack. He said:

“To God be the glory, I just survived an attack on my way from Umunneochi back to Umuahia. They rained bullets on our car, very close to where I was sitting. Just after we passed Okigwe Junction and approached Ezinnachi in Imo State, we noticed a vehicle driving against traffic, seemingly blocking the road. As we slowed down to assess the situation, gunmen suddenly opened fire from the side of the vehicle, right where I was sitting. We thank God for our survival. I have arrived safely in Umuahia.”

It was reported that the Commissioner was traveling with three other individuals at the time of the incident. Fortunately, none sustained injuries.

The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Danladi Isa, confirmed that the incident occurred within the Imo State jurisdiction of the expressway. He stated that the Abia State Police Command has forwarded a situation report to the Imo State Command for appropriate follow-up.

Mr. Chukwumerije’s brother, Mr. Dike Chukwumerije, also confirmed the incident, describing it as an “attempt on his life,” and noted that the Commissioner’s vehicle was riddled with bullets.

The Abia State Police Command has reassured the public that investigations are ongoing and security measures are being reinforced across the state.
