Actor Reveals Financial Struggles Despite Oscar Nominations

Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou has candidly discussed his ongoing financial challenges, despite achieving two Oscar nominations and a successful two-decade career in Hollywood.

Speaking on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, Hounsou shared his frustration about being underpaid in the film industry despite his accolades and numerous blockbuster roles.

“I’m still struggling to make a living. I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades, with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid,” he revealed.

Reflecting on his experiences, Hounsou also addressed issues of racism in Hollywood, recalling a time when he was overlooked for an Oscar nomination despite receiving recognition at the Golden Globes for the same role.

“I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars because they thought that I had just come off the boat and the streets. Even though I successfully did that, they just didn’t feel like I was an actor to whom they should pay any respect,” he lamented.

Highlighting the ongoing challenges of diversity in the industry, Hounsou emphasized that systemic racism continues to hinder progress.

Hounsou is renowned for his roles in films such as “Blood Diamond,” “In America” (for which he received his Oscar nominations), as well as “Gladiator,” “Amistad,” “Constantine,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Aquaman,” and “Furious 7.”
