Adamawa Government Confirms Cholera Outbreak, Reports 12 Deaths

The Adamawa State government has officially confirmed a cholera outbreak in the state, resulting in 12 deaths. According to the Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwami, 308 cases have been reported, with 244 patients successfully treated and discharged. Tangwami made this announcement to journalists on Sunday in Yola, the state capital.

He explained that 30 out of 38 samples sent to the National Referral Laboratory (NRL) tested positive for cholera. “On behalf of His Excellency, the Governor of Adamawa State, I want to inform you all that we have received results of samples sent to NCDC (National Center for Disease Control) for confirmation. Out of the 38 samples sent to the NRL in Abuja, 30 tested positive for cholera, six were negative, two are still under isolation, and 12 are pending,” Tangwami stated.

The Commissioner urged residents to exercise caution, emphasizing the importance of personal hygiene and ensuring safe drinking water. “I want to confirm to the public that there’s an outbreak of cholera in Adamawa State. People should be mindful of their movements, interactions, personal hygiene, and water sources,” he said.

Tangwami further reported that 12 deaths have occurred, with six fatalities at health facilities and six at home. He reassured the public that the government, through its health workers, is actively working to contain the outbreak, just as it has done in previous similar situations.

“We ask the people to continue praying for us as we face this challenge. Remain calm, cooperate with health workers as they go around to sensitize and offer professional advice,” he urged.

The government has also provided necessary support to prevent the spread of the disease to other areas, and Tangwami assured the public of ongoing updates on the situation. “We shall continue to keep you informed. Thank you for your understanding,” he concluded.
