A viral video showing plantain chips branded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s image and the slogan “Door 2 Door, Jagaban for 2027” has stirred controversy online, fueling rumors of an early re-election campaign.
The footage, shared by @ChuksEricE on X (formerly Twitter), features a man—believed to be the vendor—saying he was only hired for the branding job and is “not campaigning.” However, the chips’ clear political messaging has led many Nigerians to believe it may be a covert campaign strategy.
Social media reactions were swift and scathing. One user wrote, “If you allow yourself to be deceived again with plantain chips, you may not live to see the end of what you voted.” Another added, “Food they didn’t give you before is now being used to buy your vote.”
The incident comes amid growing public frustration over fuel scarcity, inflation, and hunger. Critics say using snacks for political branding is both insulting and out of touch.
While there’s been no official response from Tinubu’s camp, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prohibits early campaigning. If proven politically sponsored, the branded chips could violate electoral guidelines.
Whether it’s a supporter initiative or a subtle campaign move, one thing is clear: in Nigeria’s current climate, even plantain chips can spark national debate.
