Aliko Dangote Steps Down as Chairman of Dangote Sugar After 20 Years

Aliko Dangote will officially retire as Chairman of the Board of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc on June 16, 2025, marking the end of two decades of leadership at the company.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the company’s secretary, Temitope Hassan, on Wednesday.
Dangote, who has led the company since 2005, is credited with transforming Dangote Sugar into a dominant player in Nigeria’s sugar industry.
His tenure saw significant expansion efforts and the strengthening of corporate governance frameworks.
“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025,” the company stated.
Under his leadership, the company launched major Backward Integration Projects in Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States aimed at boosting local sugar production and reducing reliance on imports.
The Board has named Independent Non-Executive Director Arnold Ekpe as the new Chairman, effective the same date. Ekpe, a veteran banker and former Group CEO of Ecobank, brings a wealth of experience in corporate leadership and board governance.
“Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, effective June 16, 2025,” the statement added.

The company expressed gratitude to Dangote for his decades of service and welcomed Ekpe as he takes on the new role, ushering in what it described as “the next chapter” in the company’s journey.
