Amaechi quits APC, slams Tinubu administration

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the country’s worsening state and the party’s alleged complicity in Nigeria’s collapse.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at the unveiling of the interim leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Former Minister of Transportation said Nigeria was in dire need of a complete overhaul. He accused the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding to manipulate upcoming elections.

“Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t eat, there’s no money, inflation is at its peak. Everything is gone,” he lamented.

Amaechi revealed that he formally left the APC on Tuesday night and expressed surprise that he hadn’t already been expelled. He added that he had previously warned party leaders not to invite him to meetings anymore.

“You can’t be in a club where the majority are stealing and remain silent,” he said.

On why he’s backing a new political platform rather than supporting the current government, Amaechi explained that the country’s problems go beyond party politics.

“This is about rebuilding Nigeria. What we need isn’t just a party but a movement that empowers ordinary Nigerians to take control,” he said.

Commenting on President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, the former minister was blunt: “I’ve never believed Tinubu is the right person to govern this country… People now wish Buhari could return.”

Amaechi criticized the current economic situation, comparing it unfavourably to Buhari’s tenure.

“When Buhari left, the dollar was around ₦460 or ₦500. Now it’s ₦1,580 — that’s over a 100% increase,” he noted.

Asked if the naira’s decline could be a deliberate policy, he replied, “Whether intentional or not, any government that ignores the welfare of its people has no policy. Tinubu himself said he’s not here to make Nigerians happy.”

On his political future, Amaechi said, “I have the right to be ambitious. I’m not overambitious.”
