Amnesty International Raises Concerns Over Muhammed Liman’s Deteriorating Spinal Injury in Borno

Amnesty International has raised concerns about the worsening health of Muhammed M. Liman, who has been hospitalized with a severe spinal injury since August 1, 2024.
Liman, an employee at A.A. Kime filling station in Maiduguri, Borno State, sustained critical injuries during the violent suppression of the #EndBadGovernance protests.
In a statement, Amnesty International recounted the incident, saying, “On that tragic day, while Liman and his colleagues were at work, a convoy of security personnel launched hand grenades at them in an effort to disperse the protesters. The attack claimed the lives of three of Liman’s friends and left him gravely injured.”
The organization criticized the lack of an investigation into the deaths of the three victims and condemned what it described as the government’s attempt to cover up the incident with misleading narratives.
Amnesty International emphasized the need for accountability, expressing outrage at the authorities’ disregard for human rights in their handling of the case.
Liman remains in critical condition, with his injuries deteriorating further. Despite the severity of the situation, the government has yet to take action to deliver justice to the victims of this violent crackdown.
“The Nigerian authorities must conduct an impartial investigation into all incidents of violent suppression of the #EndBadGovernance protests between August 1 and 10,” the statement read.
“It is unlawful to kill, seriously injure, or detain individuals peacefully demanding good governance and accountability,” the organization added.
Amnesty has called on the government to take immediate action to address the situation and ensure those responsible for the violence are brought to justice.
