Aregbesola Vows to Restore Political Ideals as He Assumes Role of ADC National Secretary

Former Minister of Interior and two-term Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has officially assumed office as the Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the newly adopted platform of the National Opposition Coalition Group.

In his acceptance speech delivered on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, Aregbesola expressed deep gratitude to the party’s leadership for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to rebuild the ADC into a value-driven, people-oriented political institution.

“It is with deep humility, a profound sense of duty, and unwavering hope that I accept this appointment,” Aregbesola said. “A political party, in its truest form, is a living institution—built on values, guided by ideals, and accountable to the people it seeks to serve.”

Drawing comparisons with the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, Aregbesola lamented the ideological bankruptcy of Nigeria’s political landscape, criticizing many political parties as “empty shells” driven by personal ambition rather than public service.

He emphasized that his leadership will focus on internal democracy, transparent competition, and active inclusion of youth, women, professionals, and marginalized groups in decision-making.

“We must become an institution where internal democracy is not just preached but practiced,” he declared. “Young people, women, and the marginalized must have a real voice—not symbolic inclusion.”

Aregbesola also outlined his commitment to modern party administration, drawing lessons from political models across Africa, Europe, and Latin America, while tailoring best practices to Nigeria’s unique context.

He stressed that the ADC, under his watch, would stand as a party that promotes real governance—supporting education, security, job creation, and national development beyond the election cycle.

“This is not an easy task. It will take time. It will demand sacrifice. But it can be done,” he concluded, urging party members to hold him accountable and actively participate in the party’s renewal.

The appointment of Aregbesola signals a bold step by the opposition coalition to present a more ideologically coherent and people-focused alternative ahead of the next general elections.
