Atiku: Tinubu’s 2025 Budget Lacks Fiscal Discipline Needed to Tackle Nigeria’s Economic Challenges

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2025 national budget, describing it as lacking the fiscal discipline required to address the country’s pressing economic challenges. Atiku, a prominent opposition leader, argued that the budget does not provide a robust framework to stabilize the nation’s economy, curb rising inflation, and alleviate the burden on Nigerians facing severe economic hardship.

In his statement, Atiku emphasized the need for a budget that prioritizes critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development, while also ensuring prudent fiscal management. He expressed concerns over the growing budget deficit and heavy reliance on borrowing, warning that such an approach could worsen Nigeria’s debt sustainability issues.

According to Atiku, the 2025 budget fails to outline clear strategies for increasing revenue generation, addressing unemployment, and fostering inclusive growth. He further criticized what he described as misplaced priorities in government spending, noting that the allocation of funds does not reflect the urgent needs of ordinary Nigerians struggling with high living costs and a declining standard of living.

Atiku urged the federal government to adopt a more disciplined and transparent approach to budget planning and implementation, with a focus on reducing waste, combating corruption, and creating an enabling environment for private sector investment. He also called for a more inclusive policy-making process that incorporates input from diverse stakeholders to ensure that the budget reflects the aspirations of all Nigerians.

The former vice president reiterated his commitment to advocating for policies that promote economic stability, social equity, and sustainable development, emphasizing that only through sound fiscal management can Nigeria overcome its current economic challenges and chart a path toward prosperity.
