Over 1,150 Nigerians Have Studied in France – French Ambassador

The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, has revealed that more than 1,150 Nigerians have studied at universities and higher education institutions in France over the years.
He praised their creativity and impact, particularly in areas such as sustainability and innovation.
Speaking at a cocktail reception in Abuja on Thursday evening to commemorate France Alumni Day — a global celebration honoring international graduates from French institutions — Fonbaustier highlighted the success of Nigerian alumni in fields such as fashion, art, environmental sustainability, and French cuisine.
In a media chat during the event, the ambassador commended the entrepreneurial drive of young Nigerians who, after studying in France, returned home to establish businesses and contribute meaningfully to society.
“You might be surprised to know that around 1,150 Nigerians have studied in France. Some have come back to Nigeria and are making local contributions, while others are working in France under employment contracts,” he said.
“In essence, these young Nigerians are using their education in France to start businesses, drive development, and fulfill their potential.”
A major highlight of the evening was the recognition of 17 Nigerian alumni for their groundbreaking plastic recycling project, which addresses environmental challenges through sustainable innovation.
“These alumni are involved in an initiative that transforms plastic waste into useful products — a clear example of how cross-border knowledge sharing can lead to practical solutions,” Fonbaustier noted.
“It’s an inclusive and diverse network that reflects Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.”

He also mentioned that a significant number of the alumni are located in Lagos and southern Nigeria, attributing this to the higher concentration of job opportunities and businesses in those areas.
