A Nigerian court has confirmed a three-year prison sentence for Professor Peter Ogban, who falsified election results in favor of Godswill Akpabio during the 2019 Senate election in Akwa Ibom North-West.

It was gathered that Professor Ogban, a soil science lecturer at the University of Calabar, was in charge of the 2019 Senate election in Akwa Ibom North-West. He was found guilty of altering election results to favor Akpabio, who was running under the APC.

Despite the rigging, Akpabio lost the election to PDP candidate Chris Ekpenyong. Ogban was convicted by a High Court in Uyo in 2021 for adding 5,000 fake votes to APC’s results in two local government areas. Ogban admitted to trying to give APC an unfair advantage. The case was brought against him by INEC.

The Court of Appeal in Calabar has upheld Ogban’s three-year prison sentence, condemning his actions as particularly shameful given his position as a professor.
