Lagos impounds trucks over Third Mainland Bridge restriction breaches

The Lagos State Government has impounded over 10 articulated trucks for flouting access restrictions on the Third Mainland Bridge.
The enforcement operation, which began over the weekend, was conducted by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) after months of public sensitisation and advisory campaigns.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, the clampdown aligns with the state’s efforts to uphold public safety, safeguard infrastructure, and ensure strict adherence to traffic regulations.
“The Third Mainland Bridge is explicitly excluded from the list of authorised routes for certain articulated vehicles,” Giwa said. “This restriction is backed by law, and any violation will attract strict penalties.”
He noted that articulated vehicles exceeding nine tonnes had been prohibited from using the bridge—especially after its recent major rehabilitation—following extensive stakeholder engagement and formal notices.
To reinforce compliance, Giwa revealed that the state has deployed modern surveillance systems to monitor activities on the bridge.
“This advanced monitoring technology is a key part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s broader road safety strategy. It is designed to prevent structural strain, promote responsible driving, and protect vital transport infrastructure,” he explained.
He reiterated that heavy-duty vehicles are banned from crossing select bridges, particularly during peak periods, as a matter of policy and legal mandate.
Giwa emphasised that the enforcement drive is not punitive but aimed at preserving infrastructure and enhancing traffic management.

However, he warned truck operators and logistics stakeholders that the grace period has ended.
“We have conducted adequate sensitisation. The regulations are clear. Any truck operator found violating the restriction will face immediate impoundment and legal sanctions,” he warned.
