Benue Assembly Renames State-Owned University to Father Adasu University
The Benue State House of Assembly has once again amended the law guiding the name of the state-owned university in Makurdi, settling on a shorter title.
With the new amendment, the institution will now be officially called Father Adasu University, Makurdi, replacing the longer Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi.
Lawmakers reached the resolution during Thursday’s plenary after adopting the report of the House Standing Committee on Higher Education.
Explaining the decision, Majority Leader Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa) said the previous name, “Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi,” was unnecessarily lengthy.

It recalls that the university was originally known as Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, until it was renamed in December 2024.
At the same session, the Assembly also passed amendments upgrading the College of Education, Katsina-Ala and the College of Education, Oju into degree-awarding institutions.
Presiding Speaker Mr. Alfred Emberga directed the House Clerk, Dr. Bem Mela, to read the bills for a third time before declaring them passed.
