Benue Killings: Chief of Army Staff Oluyede Arrives Benue Amid Deadly Herdsmen Attacks
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has relocated to Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, in response to the ongoing and frequent attacks by herders and militia groups on innocent villagers. These attacks, occurring almost daily, have resulted in numerous deaths, injuries, destruction of homes, and widespread displacement…..
According to FCNN, Lt Gen Oluyede left Abuja on Tuesday morning, accompanied by his Principal Staff Officers (PSOs) and other senior officers from Army Headquarters, to conduct an on-site assessment of the situation.
Sources revealed that the army chief has directed the deployment of additional troops to the state, intending to confront and decisively challenge the militias and armed groups terrorizing the local population.
In Benue, the COAS is set to hold strategic meetings with operational and unit commanders to review current operations and devise plans to end the violence.
He will also visit troops’ locations and operational bases to engage with soldiers and boost their morale and fighting spirit.
Additionally, the COAS plans to visit affected villages to reassure residents of their safety and reaffirm the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting law-abiding citizens and their property.
Reports of daily killings in Benue have deeply displeased General Oluyede, who may implement strategic changes, including the reassignment of commanders to lead key operational units in the state.
While in Benue, General Oluyede will personally lead troops on the frontline and is expected to remain there for several days before returning to Abuja
