Benue Youths Protest Alleged Police Killing of Emmanuella—Tension Diffused as PSA Steps In

What could have spiraled into chaos in Makurdi was swiftly brought under control today, thanks to the timely intervention of the Principal Special Assistant (PSA) to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Youth and Media Mobilization, following a protest by enraged Benue youths.

The protest, led by youth activist Ukan Kurugh, was staged at the popular Savannah Roundabout to demand justice for Emmanuella, a young woman allegedly shot dead by police officers in Benue State.

In a Facebook post, the PSA Hon. Krayzeetee Atu Terver revealed that he received an urgent call alerting him to the protest and immediately headed to the scene to ensure peace was maintained.

“Immediately, I rushed out and headed there to see how I can be of help and make sure it doesn’t turn to something else to cause breakdown of law and order,” he wrote.

Although the protest was peaceful and orderly, a near-confrontation ensued when police personnel expressed concern over the lack of formal notice for the demonstration. The PSA, recognizing the fragility of the moment, stepped in to de-escalate the situation.

“We almost had a situation at Savannah roundabout… the police felt they were not written to… and wanted to arrest the protesters but I intervened,” he said.

“I pleaded with them to rather follow the protesters to escort them through the protest.”

In an unexpected show of understanding, the police agreed to accompany the protesters as they marched, allowing them to air their grievances without disruption.

“I want to appreciate the gallant men of the Nigerian police for taking a very wise decision of escorting the Benue youths to protest against the Nigerian police,” the PSA added, praising the security agents for their cooperation and professionalism.

He stressed the importance of building synergy between the youth, police, and government, noting that Governor Hyacinth Alia—though unavailable—was fully briefed through his security advisor and other cabinet members dispatched to the scene.

“Our dear supporting governor Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia is always there for us… he sent his security advisor and other cabinet members to come and get the message to him.”

As the call for justice for Emmanuella gains traction, today’s protest has become a shining example of how dialogue, empathy and leadership can prevent unrest and build a stronger Benue.
