BREAKING: ASUU Gears Up for Nationwide Strike as Government Fails to Act on 2009 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun full mobilisation of its members across the country for a nationwide strike, following the Federal Government’s failure to meet its long-standing demands.
This move comes after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government to address unresolved issues, including the renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement.
In a memo dated October 5, 2025, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, expressed frustration over what he described as the government’s “deafening silence” despite repeated communications from the union.
He disclosed that the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU, at its emergency meeting held on September 29, 2025, had resolved to proceed with a two-week warning strike immediately after the ultimatum lapses, which could then escalate into a total and indefinite strike if the government fails to act.
“It is now one week since our resolutions were communicated to the relevant ministries, yet there has been no meaningful response,” Piwuna lamented. “As we enter the final week of our ultimatum, we urge all members to prepare for full mobilisation. Our struggle is to compel the government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement and address all pending issues once and for all.”
“The union leader thanked members for their patience throughout what he described as an “eight-year-long and torturous negotiation process.”
