Balthazar Egonga, a high-profile government official in Equatorial Guinea, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after being found guilty of embezzling over 1 billion Central African CFA francs in public funds.
According to judicial reports, Egonga personally pocketed approximately 910 million francs from the stolen amount, with investigators alleging that the majority of the funds were spent on women and a lavish lifestyle. The court highlighted evidence of luxury purchases, extensive travel, and extravagant spending habits.
Egonga, infamously known for his controversial personal life, also made headlines for his relationships with over 1,000 women across the country. Reports claim that among those involved were his own brother’s pregnant wife and even the daughter of the President scandals which reportedly surfaced online, sparking widespread public outrage.
The court’s decision marks one of the longest corruption-related prison sentences in the nation’s history and comes amid growing pressure on Equatorial Guinea’s leadership to tackle systemic corruption.
The government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the verdict, but sources within the administration suggest this may be the first of several high-profile prosecutions in an anti-corruption drive initiated earlier this year.
