ASUU Strike Grounds Activities at FUT Minna, IBBU Lapai as Lecturers Join Nationwide Action
Academic activities at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, and the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, have been brought to a halt following the commencement of a two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The industrial action, which began earlier this week, is part of ASUU’s nationwide demand for improved conditions of service and fulfillment of previous agreements reached with the government.
However, the newly established Abdulkhadir Kure University in Minna has not joined the strike, as the institution currently has no functional ASUU branch.
At both FUT Minna and IBBU Lapai, ongoing sessional examinations were abruptly suspended, leaving students stranded and wandering around the campuses or returning to their hostels.
Confirming the development, the ASUU Chairman at FUT, Prof. Lukeman Oyewobi and his counterpart at IBBU, Dr. Galadima Bala, said the strike directive was a national order binding on all members of the union.
Oyewobi noted that there is no rival union or faction of ASUU within FUT, stating that, “We all belong to ASUU.”

On his part, Bala justified the participation of IBBU in the strike, explaining that, “We will benefit most when our demands are met,” adding that, “We will not need to make fresh demands on the government for improved conditions of service.”
Meanwhile, members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) at FUT Minna were reported to have held a meeting on Monday in preparation for their own industrial action as the ultimatum issued to the government draws closer to its expiration next week.
The strike, though temporary, has disrupted the academic calendar of both institutions, with fears that prolonged industrial actions could further extend the current academic session.
