Suspected armed bandits have reportedly taken control of a village in Mushere Chiefdom, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, forcing residents to abandon their homes and farmlands.

According to reports, the attackers drove villagers out of the community, renamed the settlement, and converted the only church in the area into a mosque, actions residents describe as a symbol of total occupation.

A community leader, Amos Gyang, disclosed this development while speaking during a charity programme organised by the Plateau Unite Foundation in Jos on Sunday.

Gyang explained that the attack came as a surprise, noting that the community had lived peacefully alongside Fulani settlers in the area for many years without major conflict.

He stated that the assailants invaded the village unexpectedly, killing more than ten people and taking over the community.

Many survivors, he said, are now living in displacement camps under harsh conditions, with several families struggling to feed their children and some resorting to begging for survival.

The community leader further alleged that the attackers seized farmlands, livestock, and homes after pushing residents out. He added that the renaming of the village and the conversion of the church represented a painful loss of their ancestral heritage.

“We were living peacefully and focusing on farming, which is our major livelihood,” Gyang said. “But in September 2025, everything changed when armed bandits attacked without warning.”

He added that the attackers were heavily armed and carried out killings while forcing the entire population to flee.

Gyang appealed to both the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to urgently intervene, restore the displaced community, and strengthen security presence in the area to prevent further attacks.
