BREAKING: Nigerian Police Detain VeryDarkMan After Honouring Invitation In Abuja
The Nigeria Police Force detained social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, on Thursday evening. Although the specific reason for his detention remains unclear, Otse’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, stated that his client was detained after responding to a police invitation. According to Adeyanju’s post on X, Otse had also attended a similar police invitation the previous day.
Fusion Chronicles Nigeria reported that VeryDarkMan recently issued a public apology to the Nigeria Police Force for wearing a police uniform in a viral video, in which he humorously referred to himself as the CSP of an “online division.” Following questioning by the police on Wednesday over alleged impersonation, Otse clarified in a video posted to his X account that he was unaware of the need for police authorization to wear police uniforms or similar attire. He advised other content creators to seek proper clearance from law enforcement before incorporating official uniforms into their content.
The Nigeria Police Force has expressed strong disapproval of the unauthorized use of police uniforms by content creators. In a statement released on Saturday, the police reminded the public that wearing police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements without permission is a criminal offense. The police also confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the source of the police gear used in Otse’s video and to verify the authority behind its portrayal.
In a broader context, the police have voiced concerns over the past year regarding unauthorized use of police attire by individuals, filmmakers, and skit creators.
