Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have raised alarm over a disturbing threat by terrorists to bomb the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
The revelation came from Hon. Garba Muhammad, Chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security, during a public hearing on Tuesday. The session was convened to deliberate on a bill seeking the establishment of a Legislative Security Directorate an agency designed to set standards for the recruitment and management of security personnel, including the Sergeant-at-Arms.
Muhammad emphasized that the National Assembly has become increasingly vulnerable due to the heavy daily flow of people lawmakers, staff, visitors, lobbyists, protesters, and other individuals who access the complex for various reasons.
“Because of the constant influx of people into the parliament, criminals and other dangerous elements attempt to infiltrate the premises to carry out unlawful acts,” Muhammad said.
“He disclosed that the legislative complex has already faced numerous security breaches, including car and motorcycle thefts, vandalism, use of fake ID cards, and unauthorized entry by visitors.
“We have received direct threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly complex and from some protesters threatening to shut it down,” he warned.
“Muhammad further noted that lawmakers are increasingly exposed to intimidation and threats from constituents and other individuals who gain unrestricted access to their offices.
“He cautioned that if these security lapses persist, they could disrupt legislative activities halting plenary sessions, budget deliberations, and oversight functions thereby endangering Nigeria’s democratic stability.
“Effective security management requires a holistic and integrated approach to protect the legislature and ensure its smooth operation,” he stressed.
“The proposed bill, he added, is designed to overhaul the current security system and align it with international best practices in parliamentary protection. Muhammad also urged state Houses of Assembly across the country to adopt similar stringent security measures to safeguard their institutions.
