Yobe Government Debunks Market Closure Rumours, Confirms Only 3 Shut Over Boko Haram Threat

The Yobe State Government has refuted claims that eight weekly markets across the state were shut down, clarifying that only three markets—Buni Yadi, Kukareta, and Katarko—were temporarily closed due to security operations.

In a statement issued by Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd), Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, the closures were described as a precautionary measure in support of counter-insurgency efforts against Boko Haram.

“The temporary closure is aimed at enabling some proactive engagements and consolidating the successes recorded in the ongoing counter-insurgency operation in the state,” the statement read.

Initial reports had listed more markets, including Bumsa, Goniri, Gujba, and Geidam, but the government confirmed that only the three mentioned were officially shut.

Abdulsalam emphasized that the move is temporary and strategic:

“This action became necessary to improve the overall security situation in the affected areas and the state at large.”

He appealed for public understanding and cooperation, assuring residents that security efforts are being intensified to ensure a swift return to normalcy.

The clarification follows a recent IED attack along the Katarko-Goniri road that killed four people and injured several others. The government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and urged citizens to remain vigilant and supportive of ongoing operations.
