Building Collapse in Ikwerre: One Person Trapped Amid Structural Errors
A two-story building under construction in Igrwuta, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, collapsed at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday due to structural defects. As of the time of filing this report, one individual remains trapped under the rubble, with rescue efforts still ongoing.
According to Nwosu Chima Nicky, a Fusion Chronicle correspondent who was at the scene, the collapse has been attributed to the use of substandard materials.
Eyewitness reports and on-site observations revealed that the reinforcement rods used in the construction were 12mm in diameter, falling short of the 16mm rods mandated by engineering regulations for structures exceeding one story.
“The materials seen, particularly the rods, do not meet the required standards to support a two-story building,” Nwosu confirmed. “This is a clear case of structural errors and defects.”
Men of the Rivers State Fire Service are actively working to rescue the trapped individual, as the incident has drawn attention to the critical need for strict adherence to construction standards and regulations.
