Akpabio Rejects Service Extension for Retired National Assembly Workers

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed strong opposition to the practice of granting service extensions to retired National Assembly management workers, describing it as a violation of public service rules.

Akpabio directed the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) to immediately remove such workers from service to uphold regulations.

He made this statement during a meeting with the outgoing chairman and members of the NASC in his office in Abuja.

“Mr. Chairman and members of the National Assembly Service Commission, your visit to me today for a notification of the end of your tenure is one of mixed feelings.

“It’s mixed feelings in the sense that it is sad to miss a very experienced hand like you, but at the same time happy that you ended well after five years in office,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President also noted that the Secretary of the NASC would oversee the commission’s activities temporarily until he and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, make recommendations for a new chairman and members.

Akpabio emphasized that lapses observed during the outgoing board’s tenure must be addressed to improve the operations of the National Assembly Service Commission moving forward.

This directive underscores the Senate President’s commitment to enforcing public service rules and ensuring accountability within the National Assembly management.
