Civil Society Urges IG Egbetokun to Address Nweke’s Unresolved Police Abduction Case Since 2013

A prominent civil society organization has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding urgent action on the unresolved case of Nweke, who was allegedly abducted by police officers in 2013. The petition, submitted recently, highlights the prolonged injustice and the need for accountability within the Nigerian Police Force.

According to the organization, Nweke’s disappearance has remained a mystery for over a decade, with no concrete response from law enforcement authorities. The petitioners argue that despite multiple attempts by his family and human rights activists to seek justice, there has been no significant progress in investigating the officers allegedly involved.

The group further emphasized that cases like Nweke’s contribute to the growing distrust between citizens and security agencies. They called on Inspector-General Egbetokun to prioritize the matter and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. “This case represents a test of the police’s commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring accountability within its ranks,” a spokesperson for the organization stated.

The petitioners also urged the police leadership to implement reforms that would prevent similar incidents in the future. They stressed the importance of transparency, internal discipline, and stronger oversight mechanisms to curb police misconduct.

As the demand for justice gains momentum, human rights groups and concerned citizens continue to watch closely, hoping for a breakthrough in a case that has remained unresolved for far too long.
