Court Stops Kogi Govt from Blocking Achuba’s ₦1bn Benefits

The Court of Appeal has thwarted an attempt by the Kogi State Government to block the payment of over ₦1 billion entitlements owed to the state’s former Deputy Governor, Elder Simon Achuba.

Delivering its ruling, the appellate court upheld the earlier judgment of the Kogi State High Court, which had declared that Achuba was entitled to his severance package and other benefits as a former deputy governor.

The court dismissed the government’s appeal, describing it as lacking in merit, and ordered immediate compliance with the ruling.

Achuba, who served as deputy governor before his controversial removal from office in 2019, had dragged the state government to court over the non-payment of his benefits.

The latest ruling is seen as a significant victory for the former deputy governor and a blow to the state government’s prolonged resistance to settling the financial entitlements.
