cyclist dies in crash while making call in Lagos

A cyclist, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, tragically lost his life in a collision with a truck in the Ikeja area of Lagos State on Sunday.
This information was communicated in a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
According to the statement, the cyclist lost control of his bike while trying to navigate from Alausa Bus Stop to Radio Road. This maneuver led to the fatal collision with the truck.
Taofiq indicated that the force of the impact caused the cyclist to strike his head on the pavement, resulting in immediate death.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the cyclist was attempting to maneuver from Kudirat Abiola Way towards ‘Radio’ along Obafemi Awolowo Way when he collided with the moving truck,”
Taofiq explained. “In the process, he tragically lost control, suffered a severe blow to his head upon hitting the pavement, and succumbed to his injuries almost instantly.”
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the cyclist was engaged in a phone conversation via an earpiece at the time of the accident, which likely contributed to a dangerous lapse in concentration on the busy expressway.
LASTMA officers quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area, ensuring the safety of other road users and maintaining traffic flow. The Alausa Police Division was notified and responded promptly.
The deceased’s body was subsequently handed over to the police and transported to the Ikeja General Hospital morgue.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the importance of road safety.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time. We strongly encourage all road users, particularly cyclists, to remain vigilant and properly equipped at all times while navigating public roads,” Bakare-Oki stated.
