Devastating Rainstorm Destroys Homes, Council Secretariat Gate in Plateau’s Jos South

A violent rainstorm on Wednesday night wreaked havoc in Bukuru community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving widespread destruction in its trail.

Several homes were damaged, while the Jos South Council Secretariat Gate was completely brought down by the storm.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Jos South LGA, Silas Patrick Dung, said the force of the storm was unusually strong.

“For the storm to destroy the Council Secretariat gate built with 25mm rod tells you that it must be a very strong rainstorm,” he said.

During an assessment visit with officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Dung disclosed that at least six houses were destroyed, while many others lost their roofs and fences.

“From what we can ascertain at the moment, we have counted about six houses that were destroyed. We are still going round the community and waiting to hear from other locations if the extent of the damage is more than what we are able to assess now,” he explained.

Describing the event as a natural disaster, the chairman emphasized that nothing could have been done to prevent the storm’s impact.

“It’s actually a storm that caused the havoc… So, it is a natural disaster and not man-made because there is nothing anyone could have done to stop the storm. The local government is working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide support to affected residents,” he added.

Dung further assured that immediate safety measures were being taken to prevent additional risks.

“We are trying to pull down the structure so as to avert further risk the vandalised part will cause the people,” he stated.

The council has begun efforts to provide relief and support for residents whose properties were destroyed.
