Dino Melaye Called to Bar as Nigerian Lawyers Celebrate Historic Induction
Former federal lawmaker and outspoken political figure, Senator Dino Melaye, was among the thousands of new lawyers formally called to the Nigerian Bar on Thursday in Abuja.
The ceremony, held at the Nigerian Law School headquarters in Bwari, marked a historic moment as the Body of Benchers inducted over 5,700 fresh wigs into the legal profession the highest in a single session in Nigeria’s history.
Senator Melaye, known for his fiery speeches in the National Assembly and controversial political stunts, added “Barrister-at-Law” to his profile after successfully completing his legal training. He joined the distinguished list of Nigerian politicians who have earned legal credentials, combining political clout with professional legal expertise.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Melaye described the occasion as “a dream fulfilled” and promised to use his legal knowledge to “defend democracy and uphold justice.”
“Becoming a lawyer is not just an academic achievement for me; it’s a calling to stand for truth, constitutionalism, and the rights of the oppressed,” he said.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Chiroma (SAN), congratulated all inductees for their hard work and dedication, urging them to uphold the ethics and dignity of the legal profession.
The Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), also reminded the new lawyers of their responsibility to serve the nation with integrity, noting that “the quality of our democracy depends on the quality of our lawyers.”
The inclusion of prominent figures like Senator Melaye in the new cohort has sparked interest and mixed reactions across social media, with many Nigerians praising his commitment to personal growth and others questioning his legal intentions in the context of his political history.
Regardless, Melaye’s call to the Bar marks a new chapter in his public life, one that now carries both political and legal weight.
