Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has reportedly left Nigeria for Qatar, following escalating tensions in Northern Nigeria after a stern warning from former U.S. President Donald Trumpregarding terrorist activities in the region.
Multiple sources claim that El-Rufai departed the country secretly on Sunday night, just hours after Trump issued a statement threatening targeted airstrikes on terrorist hideouts in Northern Nigeria. The U.S. government has expressed increasing concern over reports of international terror financing networks operating within West Africa.
Trump, who has taken a hardline stance on terrorism in Africa, warned that “those aiding or harboring terrorists will face consequences.” Although he did not name specific individuals, political observers believe the comment has sent shockwaves through parts of Nigeria’s northern political elite.
According to sources familiar with the matter, several politicians and influential figures are said to have gone into hiding amid fears of impending investigations and international sanctions.
El-Rufai, who has faced previous allegations of supporting extremist groups claims he has consistently denied has remained out of public view in recent weeks. Efforts to reach his spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, security analysts warn that Trump’s remarks could heighten tensions in the region, potentially prompting new waves of political unrest and security crackdowns.
As the situation develops, Nigerian authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding El-Rufai’s reported departure or any potential U.S. coordination on counterterrorism actions in the country.
