The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Rev. Joseph Hayab, has raised serious concerns over alleged religious discrimination in Kano State.
Speaking during an interview, Rev. Hayab claimed that some land buyers in Kano are reportedly told not to build churches or beer parlours on their property a practice he described as “deeply disrespectful and painful.”
“In Kano State and I challenge anyone to come out and deny it you buy a piece of land and someone will tell you, ‘Don’t build a church or beer parlour.’ That is disrespectful, and it pains a lot of people,” Hayab stated.
The cleric called on both state and federal authorities to ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of religion or region, enjoys equal rights and freedoms as guaranteed by the constitution.
Hayab emphasized that Nigeria’s unity can only be sustained when all citizens feel protected under the law, urging the government to confront any form of religious intolerance head-on.
His remarks have since stirred heated debate online, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over what they see as another example of rising intolerance and discrimination against Christians in parts of the North.
While some residents of Kano have dismissed the claim as exaggerated, others insist that such restrictions are quietly enforced in several communities.
The Kano State government is yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
