Drone Suspected as Explosion Rocks Imo Community
Residents of Umuneke Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State, were jolted by a powerful explosion early Sunday morning, suspected to have been caused by a drone or bomb attack.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that a drone was spotted hovering over Umuneke and nearby communities around 1:00 am, just minutes before the devastating blast occurred.
“We were awoken by the sound of a drone hovering above us, and before we knew it, there was a massive explosion,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re still trying to process what has happened.”
The explosion reportedly destroyed one building and caused damage to several others, with the shockwaves felt over two kilometres from the epicentre.
Local leaders, including the Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, and the Secretary General of Obazu Autonomous Community, Hon. Emeka Nosiri, quickly visited the scene to reassure residents and assess the damage.
The Mbieri Police Division, led by DPO Supol Wet Ben, has launched an investigation, with the anti-bomb unit of the Nigeria Police Force expected to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
