Tinubu Slashes Kidney Dialysis to ₦12,000

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a groundbreaking subsidy on kidney dialysis, cutting the cost per session from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 in federal hospitals across the country.

The initiative, which is already being implemented in selected facilities across the six geopolitical zones, is expected to bring relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related illnesses.

Hospitals currently offering the subsidized dialysis services include Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta in Lagos, FMC Jabi in Abuja, University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, FMC Owerri, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), FMC Abeokuta, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), FMC Azare, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

According to government officials, more federal hospitals will be added nationwide before the end of the year to expand access to affordable dialysis treatment.

This subsidy comes on the heels of last year’s approval of free Caesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals, further underscoring the administration’s push to improve healthcare accessibility for Nigerians.

Stakeholders in the health sector have welcomed the move, describing it as a lifesaving intervention for families struggling with the rising cost of managing chronic kidney disease.
