Tinubu Grants Presidential Pardon to Maryam Sanda, Convicted of Killing Husband

President Bola Tinubu has granted a presidential pardon to Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.
Sanda, who was convicted on January 27, 2020, was among 175 inmates and ex-convicts granted clemency on Thursday, following the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.
The 37-year-old, who spent six years and eight months at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, was convicted of culpable homicide.
According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Sanda’s family had appealed for her release, citing the welfare of her two children.
“The plea was also based on her exemplary conduct in custody, genuine remorse, and her reformation, which showed her readiness to live as a responsible citizen,” Onanuga said.
Sanda’s case dates back to November 19, 2017, when she fatally stabbed her husband, the son of former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Haliru Bello.
