Eno Donates N50m to Support Akwa Ibom Education Foundation

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has pledged N50 million to support the educational foundation of the Oron Union, a sociopolitical organization representing the Oron ethnic nationality in the state.
The donation was announced during the grand finale of the Union’s centenary celebration held at the Oron Civic Centre on Saturday.
Represented by Senator Effiong Bob, political leader of Uyo Senatorial District, Governor Eno emphasized the importance of education in the development of communities.
“To support the continued growth and development of the Oron youth, the government is contributing N50 million to the education foundation of the Oron Union,” Eno said. “Education has played a significant role in bringing us to where we are today, and it remains key to the future.”
Senator Bob commended the Oron Union for its remarkable achievements over the past century, noting that the unity and industriousness of the Oron people are largely attributable to the Union’s consistent efforts.
“For 100 years, the Oron Union has preserved and promoted the unique cultural identity, unity, and progressive spirit of the Oron people, while collaborating with other socio-cultural groups to foster statewide development,” he noted.
Governor Eno reiterated his commitment to running an inclusive administration that provides equal opportunities to all ethnic groups in the state.
He highlighted several projects undertaken in the region, including the Oron Maritime Shore Protection initiative.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi—an indigene of the Oron Nation—described the centenary as both a celebration of history and a vision for the future. She praised the enduring unity and communal spirit that have defined the Oron Union for a century and encouraged the younger generation to carry that legacy forward.
In his welcome address, President General of the Oron Union, Sir Essang Bassey, reflected on the Union’s founding.
Starting with just 88 members, the Union has consistently focused on educational advancement for the Oron people.
“In line with our founding ideals, we have prioritized education,” Bassey said. “The Union established two secondary schools—one in Enwang, Mbo Local Government Area, and the other in Nsie, Okobo Local Government Area.”
He further announced that, to commemorate the centenary, the Union would award over 100 scholarships to deserving students. “Scholarships have always been a cornerstone of our mission.
