Faruk Lawan Declares Transformation After Prison Term, Says He Is a “Better Person”
Faruk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, has described himself as a changed man following his five-year imprisonment for accepting a $3 million bribe from oil magnate Femi Otedola.
Speaking on Saturday during a visit to the Shanono/Bagwai Federal Constituency in Kano State, Lawan reflected on his experiences and expressed gratitude for his personal growth. Addressing a large entourage of supporters and associates, he said, “Today, I am a better person, and I thank God for everything. My visit is not political but aimed at condoling with families, sympathizing with the sick, and paying homage to traditional leaders.”
Lawan, dressed in the signature white and red cap attire of Kwankwasiyya, emphasized his current non-aligned political status, stating, “I am freelancing in politics and presently do not belong to anybody.”
During his visit, he was warmly received by Alhaji Nura Shehu Ahmad, the Magajin Rafi of Kano and District Head of Bagwai, who described Lawan’s imprisonment as “a blessing in disguise.” Ahmad praised Lawan for his resilience and dedication to his people even during his incarceration.
“Many of us who were once critical of you have now become not just your supporters but your loyal allies, understanding your genuine passion for your people,” Ahmad said.
He further commended Lawan’s commitment to his constituents, adding, “Even in prison, Faruk Lawan maintained strong connections with us. He supported the needy, kept in touch, and sent messages to many of us. We are truly grateful and proud to have you back.”
Lawan’s return to public life appears to signal a renewed relationship with his constituency and a fresh chapter in his political journey.
