What FG will Spend Annually on Buhari’s Family, Offers More Benefits
Following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Government will begin providing a comprehensive package of entitlements to his surviving family members, in line with Nigerian law.
According to Section 2 of the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (and Other Ancillary Matters) Act, the family of any deceased former Head of State is entitled to several state-funded privileges and financial benefits.
Under this provision, Buhari’s surviving spouse will receive a monthly upkeep allowance of N350,000, amounting to N4.2 million annually. In addition, the family will get an education and family support allowance of N1 million per year, paid in quarterly instalments of N250,000, to assist with general upkeep and the education of the late president’s children up to university level.
Beyond financial payments, the family will also enjoy free medical care abroad fully funded by the Federal Government. They are further entitled to a 30-day vacation each year, either within or outside Nigeria, at public expense.
Housing is also covered under the law. The Federal Government will provide the family with a fully furnished five-bedroom residence, located anywhere in the country based on their preference.
These benefits are part of Nigeria’s long-standing statutory entitlements for former presidents and their families, aimed at ensuring continued welfare after public service.
